Informal/Organic - Naturalistic, asymmetrically placed design elements, naturally shaped plants and beds, curved spaces, rustic looking furnishings, casual pathways, hardscape usually dry set, battered, integrated with plantings. Think cottage garden or “farmscape.”
Formal/Modern - Symmetrical, rectilinear, hardscape usually mortared (patios, walkways, steps, walls), plantings are shaped, usually repeated in a very organized manner. A disciplined look.
Japanese Garden - Incorporates subtle water features or fountains, sand, gravel, and larger boulders, ponds, bridges, plants of varying textures, and garden elements. Lush plantings, especially in shady areas.
Eco-Garden - Incorporates methods of sustainability and permaculture by using primarily native plants, pollinator plants, organic mulches, water harvesting, and rock gardens. Lawns do not have a place in the eco-garden. It is an offering to the eco-system that many see as troubled as it fights against toxins, pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction.
Mediterranean Garden - Very influential style offering soft colors, gravel walks, clipped hedges, informal and drought-tolerant plantings (succulents, scented plants and herbs), seating areas usually with pergolas, pots, urns, and jars to be used as focal points. Stone perimeter walls and raised planters can also play a role in this style of garden.
